This Karenic etymon is probably to be identified with #2393 PTB *g-la(ŋ/k) FALCON, VULTURE, EAGLE, KITE, HAWK, BIRD OF PREY, which is of Mon-Khmer origin. See STC n. 225, p. 72. The final stop is paralleled in the Chinese comparandum mentioned in STC, loc. cit.
